Celebrating Inclusion: International Day of Persons with Disabilities

Today, we want to chat about something super important that often goes unnoticed—International Day of Persons with Disabilities, celebrated every year on December 3rd. This day isn’t just about raising awareness; it’s about making real changes in our communities to promote inclusion for everyone, no matter their abilities.

Living in Calgary, we’re lucky to have a vibrant community filled with diverse individuals. But how can we ensure that everyone feels included? Here are some small yet impactful ways to promote inclusion right here in our city!

1. Community Events that Welcome Everyone

  • Think about hosting or attending events that are designed to be accessible for everyone. This could be community fairs, arts festivals, or even local sports matches! Make sure the venues are wheelchair accessible, have clear signage, and provide services like sign language interpreters. Calgary has plenty of amazing local events, let’s make sure all our friends can enjoy them!

2. Support Local Businesses with Inclusive Practices

  • Shop at businesses that prioritize inclusivity. Many local cafés and shops are already making efforts to become more accessible. Look for those that have ramps, spacious aisles, or provide employment opportunities for persons with disabilities, Like Lil E Coffee Cafe. Spread the word about these businesses on social media—let’s cheer them on!

3. Educate Yourself and Others

  • Knowledge is power, right? Take some time to learn about the challenges people with disabilities face and share that knowledge. There are loads of great resources available online or even at the local library!

7. Start a Conversation

  • Sometimes, simply talking about disabilities and inclusion can break down barriers. Bring it up during family dinners or casual conversations with friends. You might be surprised at how much people want to learn!

8. Be Mindful and Aware

  • Lastly, just being aware of our surroundings and accommodating those around us can make a significant difference. Hold doors open, offer help, and always be mindful of your language. Small acts of kindness really do go a long way.

As we approach December 3rd, let’s take a moment to reflect on how we can contribute to a more inclusive Calgary. Remember, it doesn’t take massive actions to make an impact—sometimes, it’s the little things that count the most. By promoting kindness, understanding, and inclusion, we can celebrate the spirit of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities every day of the year!
